Who we are
In 2008, a group of volunteers sharing a passion for the people of Nicaragua founded UNIDOS Nicaragua, a non-profit organization.
Our biggest ongoing work is the support of Colegio Cristiano Havila, a private school in Los Cedros, Nicaragua. Havila was founded in 2005 with the mission of providing education and encouragement to the poorest of the poor. Nicaragua has an extensive public school system, but a typical household income is about $7,000 per year – much less in rural communities like Los Cedros – and even the modest financial requirements of school uniforms and basic school supplies are beyond the reach of many families.
Havila was founded to give those families access to a quality education for their children.
Havila has grown from 35 students meeting in a church to about 375 students ranging from preschool through high school. Through our sponsors and other donors, UNIDOS Nicaragua provides 70-75 percent of the school’s operating funds from year to year, which allows Havila to be extremely generous in admitting and supporting students from poor families.
UNIDOS Nicaragua is entirely volunteer based, and we remain committed to partnering with the people of Nicaragua as they work toward a better future for their children and families.
