Nicaragua Women’s Team

This year was our women’s trip to Los Cedros, Nicaragua and what a trip it was! We had 13 women on our team and enjoyed being together so very much. Last September we thought there would be only 5 women coming with us, but God definitely had other plans. He brought to us a group of women that He knit together into a TEAM and were we blessed! Loretta Trainor, Pam Garries and myself were the leaders of this team.

Michael and Sue Buzzbee’s daughter Elizabeth was married on Saturday, January 12th so we didn’t arrive in Nicaragua until very late Sunday night. The Buzzbee’s compound was still full with many wedding guests so we all bunked together in the bunkhouse our first night which we have never done before. Amidst some giggling and getting settled we quickly quieted to gentle snores and the whir of many fans. As it turned out, the team stayed in the 2 bunk rooms all week and seemed to enjoy having more room to spread out and more bathroom areas available.

Visiting Women in Their Homes, Calle Nuevo

We had our 2 translators from last year, Alejandra and Kenia join us on Monday for a day of shopping at the Masaya Market and getting stocked up on water, snacks and soda pop for the week at La Union. As we spent the day together we began to become acclimated to the new sights and sounds of Nicaragua. It’s an adjustment to not being home and being with a new group of women in a foreign country, but we all got unpacked and settled into our rooms with our new room ies so that we would be ready to begin our ministry week in Los Cedros on Tuesday.

As is our custom, we met our Nicaragua friends at the church on Tuesday and had a sweet time of fellowship as we prayed for them and they prayed for us. Judy Hystad shared an answer to prayer that happened in her family last year when the ladies prayed for her. What a blessing to have these women share their needs with us and in turn listen to our needs and pray for us knowing that God was at work on our behalf. After prayer, we had lunch with the leadership women of the church and then visited the school where the team had the opportunity to meet their Adopt-A- Student. It was so fun to see all of the children anxious to meet their sponsors. We had a great time seeing their little faces in person. By late afternoon we headed home to the Buzzbees where we rested and began preparations for the conference.

Wednesday found us again in Los Cedros where we met the leadership women of the church. They took us out to the area known as Calle Nuevo where Eben Ezer has begun a church plant. For me this is the best day of the trip as we have the opportunity to see the women in their homes and are blessed with the opportunity to pray for them and leave bags of rice and beans for them. The poverty is so acute and the needs so great that it is humbling to know that God has not called us to meet all of their needs but He has called us to intercede on their behalf. I have grown in my own life in knowing that Jesus and intercessory prayer are the greatest gifts we can bring.

God’s Church in Reyes Norte

After an exhausting morning, we again had lunch with the leadership women. The plan was to go out to Reyes Norte (another church plant) in the afternoon, but we were tempted not to go because we had run out of rice and beans and we were all really tired. Thankfully, our Nicaraguan sisters insisted that we go so we did. We had no idea what awaited us as we traveled down
that old dirt road. When we stopped under a tree on the side of
the road and were told that this was where the church met we
were without words. Then we saw from down the road and
across the fields women and their children coming to meet us under that big, old tree. They brought folding chairs with them and together we sang and prayed. We laid hands on their heads and prayed fervent prayers of healing and that God would meet their
needs and heal their broken hearts. We all felt that we were
standing on holy ground as we interceded on their behalf to a
God who knows them and loves them. What a precious day of
ministry for each of us.

Thursday evening was the beginning of our women’s conference. We shared dinner together and Margaret spoke on the topic, “The heart of sin: ingratitude”. On Friday and Saturday she expanded this theme and taught from the experience of the 10 lepers in Luke 17 and how only 1 leper came back to say thank you to Jesus. All 10 lepers were healed physically, but only 1 was healed spiritually. To underscore the importance of thanksgiving we had the ladies make gratitude journals and it was a joy to see them place post it notes on a large paper cross on the wall with things they were thankful for. We shared lunch on both Friday and Saturday and gave the women opportunities to make fabric hearts as well as shop at our Blessing Boutique. Once again the

conference was well attended with over 350 women (and who knows how many children!) and we were able to bless them with Joy Bag gifts, wooden spoons and towels, rice and beans and most importantly, Spanish Bibles for those who didn’t have one.

Teaching the Word

The initial vision that God gave to me 6 years ago was to bless the ladies with hope and encouragement in their walk with God through a women’s conference. So far God has not changed that focus, and I am happy to report that we have had many, many opportunities over the years to encourage the women in Los Cedros, Nicaragua through intercessory prayer and the teaching of the Word. I also think it is an encouragement to them to have us come year after year, faithfully bringing His message of hope that they are not alone and are intimately known by a Savior who passionately loves inem and cares for them.

Pastora has invited us to return again in 2014 and Lord willing, we will. The Lord is already bringing together a leadership team to accomplish His purposes. It is an incredible joy and blessing to serve the Lord in this way. Thank you for supporting us in so many ways!!
